Controlling Pests in Your RV
Pest infestations can make it difficult to enjoy your hard-earned RV trip. Even if you don’t see the pests themselves, you’ll notice the signs. Droppings, nests, chewed wires, bad smells, and more will be your first clue that your camper has picked up a few uninvited hitchhikers. Luckily, there are all kinds of strategies you can employ to help deal with these pests. If you want to learn more about how to deal with pest infestations in your RV, check out this guide from JR Motors.
Cleaning
One of the best ways to keep pests out of your RV is by simply keeping it as clean as possible. Food traces like spills and crumbs left uncleaned for too long can create a smell. While this smell might sometimes be too faint for human noses to detect, it will still send pests the message that your RV is a warm place where food is easy to find. Removing food traces and keeping dry food in airtight containers can make your RV less appealing to pests.
Rodents
Rodents like rats and mice are surprisingly good at squeezing through small holes in your RV’s frame. Routinely inspect the outside of your RV, and be ready to plug any holes that you find. If rodents have already made their homes within your RV, use traps of poison to deal with them.
Insects
There are many different kinds of insects, and each requires a slightly different strategy to remove them from your RV. Roaches are vulnerable to bait and insecticides. Just be careful about how you use these substances since they are just as toxic to people and pets as they are to insects. A good way to deal with ants is by spraying down the surfaces with soapy water and wiping them down to remove the chemical “ant trails” that they use to guide each other. Just make sure you find their colonies and remove them. Some RV owners vacuum up ants to dispose of them elsewhere. Lastly, there are bees and wasps. You’ll want to avoid getting stung if possible. Bee hives and wasp nests are tricky to get rid of, and you might need to call a professional exterminator if you find one in your RV.
