How to Refuel Your Boat
Refueling your boat isn’t as simple as cruising up to the dock and filling your tank. A lot that can go wrong while fueling up, leading to a damaged boat or, even worse, injury to yourself or others. Use the tips in this guide from JR Motors to safely refuel your boat so you can get back on the water!
Beware Spills and Vapors
Spilled marine fuel and leftover fuel vapors are very dangerous. Even the smallest spark can be enough to ignite these leftover fuel traces! Turn off any electrical equipment before beginning refueling, and routinely check your hose lines, engine fittings, and strainers. You should also shut any of your vessel’s doors, windows, and hatches before refueling to help keep any spills out of your boat’s nooks and crannies.
Fuel Type
There are many different types of marine fuel, and putting the wrong kind into your engine will cause serious damage. If you’re unsure which fuel types are compatible with your boat’s engine, check the owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s instructions.
Filling the Tank
Your boat’s fuel tank will make a distinctive sound when it’s close to full. Listen for this sound so that you know when to stop pumping. If conditions around the refueling dock are too loud, try to give it your best estimate. Remember that nothing stops you from leaving the refueling dock with a tank that’s only 80-90% full.
Handling Spills
Fuel spills removed via dish soap will sink to the bottom of the water, creating an environmental hazard. You should instead clean up spilled fuel using a fuel-absorbent pad and dispose of it in accordance with local laws.
Before Leaving
Before you leave the refueling dock, ensure no fuel fumes have become trapped on your vessel. If your vessel is equipped with a boat blower, now is the time to use it. Don’t forget to open up your vessel’s hatches, windows, and doors so that any leftover fumes can escape. If you still smell fumes near the bilge or engine, you’re not safe to leave yet. Once all fuel traces are gone from your boat, start your engine and carefully maneuver away from the dock.
